Graduate Student Health Insurance

Graduate student health insurance is an important thing that you should prepare for your child who has already graduated from school. Protecting and caring for children does not stop at school graduation. Finding a good graduate student health insurance is as necessary as registering for classes.

Though almost all people realize that they need to get a graduate student health insurance for their children, a recent survey by Commonwealth Fund Task Force revealed that 10 percent of students would opt out of paying for their health insurance if they could. It might be caused by the high cost people have to pay to get a good graduate student health insurance. The same study also showed that people ages 19 to 29 are twice more likely to be without health care coverage than children and senior citizens, and the number of uninsured young people in this age bracket has increased from 22 to 30 percent.

Graduate student health insurance is really needed if you have graduated from college and are heading to graduate school or are looking for your dream job. Millions of people are in debt today due to unforeseen medical expenses for which they didn’t have adequate coverage. With graduation comes more responsibility and that includes the responsibility to protect things of value such as your health and your auto, because just as you’d protect your car with insurance, your health needs to be protected as well.

There are some types of graduate student health insurance you are able to choose. Each type has certain characteristic and requirements. You are able to take one type of graduate student health insurance as your need. So you are suggested to know every type before you decide to take one type of graduate student health insurance.

First type of graduate student health insurance is called as Student Select. This is a plan for college graduates attending graduate school. At the time of initial purchase, students need to be less than 30 years old and taking at least 9 credit hours. The students are able to keep the plan regardless of student status to maintain coverage until they have a full time job with benefits.

The second graduate student health insurance type is different with the first type. It is called Student Short term or is usually called as Student STM. This plan is for college graduates who have finished with school and need short term coverage between the time they graduate and the time they have other coverage such as from an employer.

Graduate student health insurance also comes to International Health Plans. If you are going to be studying abroad, this is the plan for you. It is the only plan which covers you outside of the US.

The example of graduate student health insurance comes from Aetna Student Health. Participation in the Student Health Insurance Plan is voluntary for Indiana University undergraduate and graduate students on any campus (Bloomington, Indianapolis, Gary, Richmond, Kokomo, New Albany, and South Bend).

To get the graduate student health insurance, all domestic graduate students taking three or more credit hours or registered for thesis or dissertation are eligible to enroll in this insurance plan. Home study, correspondence, and television courses do not fulfill the eligibility requirements. If and whenever Aetna Student Health discovers the eligibility requirements have not been met, its only obligation is refund of premium; less any claims paid.
